The Briard

The Briard (Berger de Brie) is a French shepherd's dog. The province of Brie corresponds to the Département Seine-et-Marne which is situated east of Paris. But the Briard can not only be found there. The history of the Briard is somewhat unclear up to the middle of the 19th century. The first written standard dates from late 19th century.

As a shepherd dog the Briard in its history had both guarding tasks and tasks of protection. From this the characteristics are derived by which the Briard until today is characterised particularly - even if they are to be found meanwhile more frequently as guardians of their families than guardians of a herd of sheep.

The Briard is durably, fast and persistent. Obviously, movement makes joy for him. Its light, springy step is sometimes compared with the course of a robbery cat. It has perseverance, needs however not extremely much movement every day in order to feel well. However, as a work dog the Briard needs tasks. These tasks should be demanding his intelligence. He can learn and wants to learn much.

We do not believe that there are at all dog races which are intended to stay the kennel or to be chain dogs. The Briard is this in no case. Briards belongs in the house, to the family herd. We let our adults of dogs sometimes sleep outside at warm nights. Cassola estimated that much. But generally, dogs want to participate, in the middle of their family. (Prefereably, naturally, in the middle in the way.)

In his nature the Briard is self-confident, independent and persistent. He has a balanced and peaceful character and reacts to strange persons or unknown things not aggressively, but with watchful restraint, as it corresponds to the determination of the race.

The Briard is very sensitive for the tendencies of his humans. He loves his humans and wants to do everything to make his owners content with him. He must naturally experience and understand what his owners want, otherwise he makes what he regards as the correct.

The Briard is not a cuddle-dog that can be educated quite casually, even if one thinks spontaneously that this bundle of fur is always nice and cute. The Briard needs his firm place in the family herd. Since most individuals received a firm character by nature, he will otherwise try to take over the vacant alpha position. But you should not train him the hard way. To the consequence also tolerance belongs and, naturally, love and patience. In that, the Briard not different from other kinds of dog.

We and our dogs

We live in the Barnim district, northeast of Berlin.

Our dogs live in the house together with us: Dogs and humans share the ground floor, while the upper floors are reserved for humans. Two thousand square meters of garden offer much room for the ones to play and plenty of work for the others - like this things are divided in life. Petra furnished her office at home in an auxiliary building. So our dogs do not need to stay alone for a longer time. However, they also had to learn to keep calm and quiet when they sometimes have to stay alone for a couple of hours.

The training of our dogs begins already at the age of ten weeks in a near puppy school. A puppy should learn to behave properly in contact with other dogs of different age and with unknown persons - the sooner the better. In addition, each walk, each visit to a restaurant and each train journey are part of the education. Our dogs learn to accompany us safely in almost every situation in life. Training for exhibitions is important part of the program with our dogs, but also here we remain modest and do not aim at exaggerated perfection.

In 2005 we started with breeding. The breeding place is furnished in an auxiliary building.

We are members of the German Briard club (BCD).
